India Rooted is right for you if you:

This is a cultural experience where the teen can develop their own connection to their homeland rather than only staying with family.  In addition, the teen has the opportunity to develop friendships with other students their age who have a similar cultural background.

Our programs have 12-20 students.

Our programs are for ages 17-19; the exact blend of who is on which program varies. We seek to create gender balance between the groups.

No. Most IndiaRooted students do not know anyone before they arrive. Some students do choose to travel with a friend, but either way, our Program Leaders help each group become a tight knit community during the program.

Yes. We can accommodate food allergies or special requirements if we know in advance.

No special skills needed to join. Our program caters to Indian Americans who are first time visitors to India as well as those who have been multiple times. We ask only that you bring with you a cheerful disposition and a willingness to try new things.

Not if you don’t want to. IndiaRooted programs are comprehensive. That said, students like to flex their independence by buying stuff they don’t really need. We recommend $150 per week to cover souvenirs etc.

Programs include all admission fees, all accommodations, most meals, all transportation during the program.

Souvenirs, keepsakes, shopping, bonus food, free time expenditures and additional snacks and soft drinks and flights to/from the program.

No – we are carefully crafting a program for all students to participate in together. This will ensure the teens will get to know others in their cohort.

After your child arrives at their destination, you will receive an email from us. After this email, expect updates with photos daily or as frequently as possible. Some locations are remote and the cellular network needed to send high-quality images isn’t always accessible in real time.

Generally, while we urge all to unplug from technology, we are realistic that technology is a part of life. We provide the opportunity for your child to call, email or text. However, s/he will not have their phone with them at all times.

Participants may bring a cell phone with them on their program.  We encourage them to disconnect in order to fully immerse themselves in the experience and get the most out of their program. We also understand that connection to loved ones at home is important. We ask students to refrain from using their phone (except as a camera) during scheduled activities. We find this helps students live in the present and build new friendships.

Wifi availability and cell phone service can vary a lot. It is the responsibility of the family/student to obtain wi-fi or cell service for use during the program.

Yes. You will receive a packing list upon registration.

Travel Questions

The participant is responsible for traveling to and from India.  All travel within India is handled as part of the program. IndiaRooted will pick up teens directly from the airport after they have completed customs clearance.

Yes, IndiaRooted program participants are on chaperoned flights within India. On these flights, we have program leaders escort students from the gateway airport to the arrival city.

participants will need to be able to carry their own luggage through the airport and to their different accommodations. We’ve found that a 40 – 50 liter duffle bag works best. Rolling suitcases, duffel bags with small wheels work fine. The most important thing is that the participant can carry the bag if need be. For domestic flights, one checked bag and one personal item is included in your airfare

An international flight from the United States to your travel destination is extra. In-country flights during programs are included in the program cost.

Hotels are vetted and well-located accommodations that offer security, have good food offerings.

Participants will share a room with two beds with another student of the same gender. We believe this encourages social connections and helps to keep participants on track as they stay connected with their roommate.

Once the group arrives, you will receive an arrival email from IndiaRooted.

Administrative Questions

You are responsible for obtaining the required visa for India as well as ensuring the student’s passport has at least six months validity from the date of arrival in India.

You can pay via Zelle, an ACH bank transfer, or check.

The program price of $6,300 includes all lodging double-occupancy, transportation within India – private bus, airfare – group meals and all itinerary custom-curated activities. $500 is paid at the time of enrollment and refundable until March 31. $2,500 is due by April 1 non-refundable and the remainder is due May 1 non-refundable. 

There are two required forms and one recommended form:

Required

  • Online medical form – This ensures we can safely accommodate your child on their program.
  • Participant Enrollment Agreement – At least one parent/guardian must complete this document. This is our agreement on the rules of conduct during the program.

Recommended

  • Parental Consent/Permission Letter – This optional letter demonstrates that children who travel without their parents have parental permission to travel abroad. While not required, immigration authorities or airline agents might request a consent letter.

Before April 1st Full refund of all amounts paid, less non-refundable enrollment fee of $500
Before May 1st Full refund of all amounts paid less non-refundable enrollment fee and 50% of program price
After May 1st No refund of any amounts
Cancellation by IndiaRooted  If a program is canceled by IndiaRooted prior to the start date, a participant may choose between a credit valid towards a future offered by IndiaRooted or a full refund of all money paid for the canceled program.

You can enroll via forms provided beginning March 1, 2024. We will collect your student’s information and an enrollment fee. You will have the option to pay in full or in two equal installments. You will find out if your child has been accepted into IndiaRooted beginning March 15.  After enrollment, additional forms to complete will be emailed to you.

We will be accepting registration from March 1, 2024 onwards.  Enrollments will be processed according to registration date and with a view to optimization of the cohort balance . Please apply for your IndiaRooted program as early as possible.

Safety Questions

Safety is job #1. We have comprehensive risk management systems in place. Further, we go to great lengths to educate and train our chaperones in First Aid and Wilderness First Responder programs.

All our field staff members will have a certification in First Aid and CPR.

We ask about medical information to ensure we can accommodate students. We can accommodate a variety of circumstances on many programs.

We are here to help but cannot provide direct medical advice on vaccinations. You can consult with your doctor or local travel clinic to discuss your travel plans. Some immunizations involve a series of vaccinations or medications. Please do not put this off for the last minute.

IndiaRooted requires that students have international medical insurance coverage. In the event of injury or illness, we will always take care of your student’s well-being. But, families are responsible for medical expenses incurred. Students should carry their insurance information while traveling on  their IndiaRooted program. We partner with a third-party to offer an optional travel protection plan with primary medical coverage. Those registered will receive this information.
